Service Spotlight: Arctic Ice Room

Published: July 30, 2010

Arctic Ice Room

WHERE IT’S AT:
Qua Baths & Spa (harrahs.com/qua) at Caesars Palace Las Vegas.

DESCRIPTION: A cool 55-degree room with a heated floor and benches. Guests relax in this mini winter wonderland as snowflakes cascade down from the domed ceiling. Tiny fiber optic lights illuminate the walls and a shaved ice fountain provides crushed chips to cool and exfoliate the skin. Not only does the room provide a unique and memorable spa experience, it provides an escape from reality—created to invigorate the senses.

EXTRA TIDBITS: Chilled to 45°F, the snow falls from the domed ceiling onto the bathers. There is a small bowl for guests to collect the ice, which is dispensed, on demand ensuring it is freshly produced for each bather. They can then apply it directly to their bodies to cool and exfoliate, or wrap it in a small towel for a gentler treatment. The cold atmosphere is accentuated by “cool” lighting, and the air is infused with mint.

INSPIRATION BEHIND THE SERVICE: Historically, the Romans understood the benefits of cooling down in the Frigidarium pools after bathing in the steamy Caldarium. The Finnish have also traditionally used snow to cool the body after bathing in a sauna. The inspiration to create these experiences is based upon these ancient traditions, with proven benefits, adapted for use within the modern spa.

PRODUCTS USED: Moisturizing snowflakes fall from above and accumulate beside guests.

COST FOR SERVICE: The Arctic Ice Room is available to any Qua guest who has booked one or more treatments. Service at the guest’s leisure.

WHO PERFORMS IT: There is no spa attendant. It is similar to a sauna or steam room.
